Darfur
Genocide
The Darfur genocide is going on right now as you read this. People are being murdered, tortured, raped, and forced to flee their homes. African farmers and other people in Darfur have been killed and forced to leave because of the Janjaweed. These militias are rivals of the Sudanese Liberation Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement because the government hired the Janjaweed to kill of the Darfuri clan.
The Darfur Genocide has destroyed life, land and resources. Bombings ruined villages and killed people. The people who survived had to flee the new places or hide in caves all because of the rivalry between the Arab militias and the government.

In the first week of 2015, 40,000 people fled their homes because of the genocide, according to the United Nations. Resources were also destroyed in bombing and fighting. Sudanese rebel groups, the Sudanese Liberation Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement, are going against the Sudanese government and causing a lot of conflict. It caused conflict because tensions were already high. This is just one cause though. Some more indirect causes include competition over land and resources because of dry land, a bad government, and a drought in the 1970’s. This caused farmers to fence in their land from the animals. In response, the nomads turned against the farmers. A more direct cause is Omar Bashir, who took control of Sudan. Omar Bashir took advantage of the distractions to be able to take control. He had an enormously negative impact on sudan.
A modern day impact of the Darfur genocide is the lowered economy in Sudan. 7.4 million Darfuris were negatively affected by this and the bad conditions there. A few more effects of the Darfur genocide are that South Sudan became a country because of the fighting and lots of land, homes, and families were destroyed in the bombings. These things negatively affected the Darfuri people.
Some overall lessons we can learn from genocide are that we shouldn’t judge people for their race, religion, or ways. Also, don’t be afraid speak up or ask for help.
