Rwandan
Genocide
Rwanda is a small country in Central Africa, south of Uganda. In the beginning the Tutsis and the Hutus got along and worked together. There were even many marriages between them. The Europeans came into Rwanda and they taught the Tutsis how to be more civilized, and eventually the Tutsis began to act like aristocrats. The Europeans introduced the Hutus to modern U.S. weapons and modern “war waging” methods. The European church made the Hutus believe that the Tutsis were treating them as if they were “oppressed”, so with the Europeans on their side the Hutus chose to rebel against the Tutsis. This began to cause tensions between the Hutus and the Tutsis.

In 1973 the civil war between the Hutus and the Tutsis began. In 1993 there was a ceasefire between the two groups. However, the Hutus were still against the Tutsis having part in any government roles. On April 6, 1994 the plane carrying the Rwandan president was shot down. The Hutus blamed the Tutsis for the assassination of their president. This led to the mass killing of the Tutsis, anyone with relations to the Tutsis, or anyone against the Hutus. A UN force knew about what was happening, but they just told the Hutus to cover the bodies so that the public would not see them. Even though they knew what was happening they did nothing to stop it. Although the Hutus only used handheld weapons.

When Europeans came to Rwanda tensions and discrimination towards the Tutsis became more common.
The main victims were the Tutsis because, the Hutus targeted the Tutsis and would kill anyone that they would find that went against them.
Men, women, and children that were Tutsis were killed. Seventy percent of the Tutsi population was killed from April 1994-June 1994. The Hutus didn't take any land or resources because they already lived there.
